Oz with Orchestra brings exciting video experience

Feb 3, 2010

For Immediate Release

Dress up as favorite Wizard of Oz character to win ticket package

SPOKANE - One of the most beloved films of all time, The Wizard of Oz, can now be seen and heard in a magical new production with the Spokane Symphony on Feb, 20 and 21 at Martin Woldson Theater at The Fox. The orchestra will play the orchestral track with the movie – LIVE!

To kick off the Oz with Orchestra promotion week, a costume contest will be held on Saturday, Feb. 13 at 2 p.m. at River Park Square. Winning entries will get free tickets to the performance and other exciting prizes. Just show up at River Park Square as one of the memorable Wizard of Oz characters at 2 p.m. on Feb. 13.

The exciting production of Oz with Orchestra was created by John Goberman, Emmy-Award winning producer of Live from Lincoln Center, and the creator of the acclaimed A Symphonic Night at the Movies series. Performances are Saturday, Feb. 20 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 21 at 2 p.m. Children and student admission for the matinee is just $14.

The Wizard of Oz was a technical marvel for the MGM studio in the late 1930s. Today, MGM has stunningly re-mastered this timeless classic.  The brilliantly restored images are accompanied by full symphony orchestra playing entirely new transcriptions of Harold Arlen’s brilliant lost scores. Hearing Judy Garland’s original 1939 studio recordings, backed by lush, live orchestration, will transport children and adults alike. With this version of The Wizard of Oz on the big screen, moviegoers will be treated to the Oscar-winning film as it has never been seen before.

In summer of 2005, the program premiered to sold-out crowds at Wolf Trap and the Ravinia Festival. Claire Marie Blaustein of The Washington Post declared, “It was an exciting evening, and the grander message of this event was truly something I found in my own back yard – the five children sitting next to me…who had never seen the movie before. There were as enraptured at their first sights of the EmeraldCity as I was seeing it with new eyes.”

Tickets range from $27 to $54 with $14 matinee tickets for children and students and are available in advance at the Box Office at the Martin Woldson Theater at The Fox, 1001 W. Sprague, or by calling 509-624-1200. Tickets are also available at all TicketsWest outlets or by calling 1-800-325-SEAT and at spokanesymphony.org.
