Mickey and Judy Strike Up the Band

Sep 21, 2005

For Immediate Release

Contact: Annie Matlow 326-3136

SPOKANE: The Spokane Symphony and conductor Morihiko Nakahara will open its SuperPops season with a fabulous nostalgia concert, the Mickey and Judy Show on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 8 p.m. in the Spokane Opera House.

This star-spangled salute to the movie music of Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland includes tuneful classic MGM film hits such as Girl Crazy, Strike up the Band, Babes in Arms, Babes on Broadway and many more nostalgic hits. Mickey and Judy's silver screen songbook includes unforgettable tunes such as Embraceable You, When I'm Not Near the Girl I Love, Fascinating Rhythm, Where or When, I've got Rhythm, and many others.

Mickey and Judy, played by Shauna Hicks and Jeff Harnar, were the top box office stars of Hollywood's Golden Era. Shauna Hicks has starred on Broadway in Blood Brothers and has won the Florida Carbonell Award and a Chicago Jeff nomination. As a singer-actress, Hicks has written two critically acclaimed one-woman shows and has three recordings. Jeff Harnar is familiar to television audiences for his acclaimed PBS specials. He is a two-time winner of the Manhattan Association of Cabaret Award as Best Male Vocalist and three-time winner of the Back Stage Bistro Award. He has appeared in Carnegie Hall and has performed in every major city across the country.

Maestro Nakahara, beginning his third season with the Spokane Symphony, will lead the musicians through this wonderful walk down Memory Lane. His fine musicianship and delightful sense of humor have given him a very special connection with the SuperPops audience.

Popular pieces by George and Ira Gershwin, Rodgers and Hart, Styne and Sondheim, and many more will have the audience tapping their feet to the rhythm and bring memories from years past.
"Polka dots and moonbeamsJust the right mixture of nostalgia and irony in a seamlessly fluent show Frothy but insightfulWith songs like "Where or When," "But Not For Me," "Embraceable You," "I Got Rhythm," "I Wish I Were in Love Again," and "Manhattan," they could hardly go wrong," said The New York Times.
